Our History - Beliefs - Values - Vision

Our History

It's easy to look back at the early 70's and smile. It seems like such a time of innocence, where every family was the Brady Bunch, everybody had long hair, dressed loudly, and used corny slang like groovy and far out. In retrospect, a lot of it really is pretty funny.

But the truth is, at the time when CBF was born, there was a lot more going on than peace signs and pop music. The Vietnam War was tearing the country's fabric apart. race riots were happening in the streets. Watergate was eroding people's ability to trust anyone.
It seemed there was nothing to believe in.

It was a time to throw away old-fashioned ideas and question everything. A time for disillusioned young people to search for their place in a rapidly changing world. Atime to rethink and explore spirituality as a way to find meaning somewhere in all the chaos.

Not all that different from now and that’s where our story begins.

In a South Jersey high school, a young teenage girl began searching for spiritual meaning in her life. Eventually, she came to believe in Jesus, and soon her friends began to believe, too. Everything jumped to a new level when her high school teacher and his family decided they would open their home to all these young people and have a Bible study there. What happened next was totally unexpected.

The group began to grow unbelievably. Soon, the high school teacher’s house was packed with teenagers, and it was apparent they were really getting into the Bible, writing spiritual songs, telling stories of all the great stuff God was doing in their lives.

Before long, they wanted to be baptized as Christians and share communion together. It seemed, weirdly enough, like God was starting a church full of kids.

Over time, things began to take form. New leaders from a nearby traditional church joined what was happening and began to help out. Weekly meetings were established, and soon all the main elements of a church were in place. The name Community Bible Fellowship was chosen as a way to express the kind of intimacy and oneness that was happening among the people.

As CBF continued to grow through the 70’s and into the ‘80s, the leaders became concerned that the church’s intimacy would be lost by getting too big. They decided to start a couple of new churches. One returned after a few years, while the other became Cedar Creek Community Church in Bayville, NJ.

In 1986, CBF purchased its present home, a really big residential building in Beachwood that was built in the early 1900s, graced with a picturesque marina view, complete with sailboats and a great old paddle boat, the River Lady. Many people contributed to the financing and renovation of the site. with its fireplace, kitchen, and family room feel, it was the kind of warm, intimate place you could call home but big enough to accommodate lots of people.

Through CBF, now over 400 people, we’ve somehow been able to maintain our classic small family feeling while expanding to a size that’ll allow us to do a lot of good in the greater toms river area. The past has been full of incredible things that God has done, and we’re really thankful for all of it. It's been a fun ride but we’re not content to look back.

We think the future of CBF is where the greatest memories will take place, and we eagerly look forward to it. From our vision to reach the next generation of young people, to our upcoming purchase of 73 acres of land in South Toms River, to our desire to use pioneering technology to better serve people's needs, we think the best is yet to come.

Thanks for taking the time to learn more about us, and enjoy the rest of your stay at CBF online!
